What is Count Your Steps?
It is an Oakland County program that blends physical activity and healthy eating for elementary school children.
Who can participate in Count Your Steps?
Third and Fourth grade students in Oakland County public, private & charter schools. Top
How do I register my child in Count Your Steps?
This is a school-based program. We cannot register individual children. Please encourage your school principal to participate in the program. Top
How do I register my school or classroom in Count Your Steps?
Each school's Count Your Steps school coordinator or third & fourth grade teacher must register their school and/or classroom online by visiting the Count Your Steps homepage. Top
What is a pedometer?
A device that tracks the number of steps an individual takes. Top
Why were pedometers selected?
They are easy to use, measure physical activity levels, and are a self-motivating exercise tool. Top
How many pedometers will be distributed?
Last year, close to 17,000 pedometers were given to 3rd and 4th grade students in Oakland County. Top
When does Count Your Steps begin?
The contest will begin Monday, April 16, 2012 and will conclude on Sunday, May 13, 2012. Top
Does the child get to keep the pedometer?
Yes, the child can keep the pedometer. They are encouraged to keep counting their steps all year long with the pedometer. Top
Will prizes will be awarded?
First, second and third place prizes are awarded to the top three 3rd grade and 4th grade students who stick to the program and log the most steps. Prizes may include an Ipod, a family pass for one year to the Detroit Zoo, and Detroit Tigers tickets. In addition, a limited amount of Oakland County Water Park passes and Detroit Zoo passes are raffled off in each classroom. The prizes are an incentive to keep the kids moving and give them reason to keep up the good work. The top school (with 20 participating students or more) is eligible to win a CYS finale celebration. Other incentives are offered to classrooms, districts, etc. Top
